It is an action philosophy, the Korean art of self-defense. Tae kwon do is thought by some to be the oldest martial art in the world!
Literally translated, tae kwon do means “foot, hand, art.” However, it is much more than kicking and punching. It was designed as a non-violent system of entire body practice and as a way of life. It includes physical and mental discipline, as well as a deep philosophy. All practitioners of tae kwon do can benefit:
Physically – by developing good coordination and a strong body;
Mentally – by building self-confidence, gaining good judgment, and developing a sound mind; and
Philosophically – by learning to respect others, help others, be honest, and always stand by the weak.
Tae kwon do, therefore, provides the foundation for building character, as well as bodies. It is now recognized as a modern world sport and a philosophy.
